CHAPTER 20
SAWYER
Then one of the four living creatures gave to the seven angels, seven golden bowls full for the wrath of God who lives forever and ever.
Revelation 15:7
When the coyotes streaked across the field, scooting under the fence and jumping through the rails, I blinked at the sight of it. Ivan, who was in wolf form and holding his own while he battled a Demon woman, paused to bark out a welcome to the newcomers. Strangely, the canines seemed to know the difference between Horas and me, and the attacking Demons. A dozen of them passed by us, leaping onto the two Demon men we were fighting in the front yard. For a moment, I lay stunned in the dew-covered grass at the chaos of the coyotes ripping chunks of flesh off the Demons. The Demons were strong though; yelps sounded as they whipped their attackers through the air.
Horas grinned, then surged into the melee, driving the sharp end of an ax into the head of a Demon being dragged down by the coyotes. I wasn’t alarmed by the sudden appearance of the army of coyotes. I knew Insepth or Ember controlled the wildlife, sending them against the Demons. I didn’t have time to contemplate it, though. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw another female Demon grab Miriam away from the children she was huddled with on the front porch. The flames were expanding, reaching higher into the sky. With a whooshing sound, the second floor collapsed. The porch beams lit, going up in a puff of smoke and flames.
A gun shot rang out. It was Elijah. Three more Demons, one female and two males rushed at him. He got another shot off before the nearest Demon smashed into him, ripping his head from his shoulders. More Demons streaked across the Amish farm with a ferocity unknown to humans. Reemer battled a handful at the hitching rail with a pitch fork. He swiped the air with the farm tool as if it was a broad sword, slashing and impaling Demons. Several Demons littered the ground around him. What damage he could wreak if he used the fire, I thought. But I let the wish go, accepting that Insepth and the other Watchers were probably right to forbid him use of the power, if he couldn’t properly contain it. Besides, he was doing a good job with his brute strength.
I didn’t have time to save both Miriam and the children. With a quick decision, I picked the little ones. Pushing my legs to move their fastest, I ran up the steps. Miriam’s terrified eyes flashed before me and I hesitated. The Demon had Miriam by the throat, and her fingers were beginning to twist. I felt the heat expanding across the porch’s ceiling, the rafters smoking, and the children crying.
I pulled my fist back and struck out, hitting the Demon squarely in the side of her head. Her neck popped back, but it wasn’t a death blow. She dropped Miriam, snarling at me.
